Inking is FUN!

I can say I have now lost my fear of the ever fickle crow quill pen. It scared me for ages but I now I greet it as a friend.

I think if a professional inker critiqued this he/she would say the following:

"Either this is a battle scene with tandem light sources in a twilight backdrop, or you can't spot blacks to save your life."

It's the latter, although there's a souçon of the former, too.

I'm learning, people.

Oh, yeah... HB-8H pencils, crow quill pen with assorted nibs, sable brush, Staedtler-Mars stylograph pens on 2-ply bristol board.

Update: Colored on what I assume is Photoshop by the incredibly talented [link] . Figured I'd include it in the process for reference for all you colorists-in-training out there.

haha, Inking IS fun! You know I had to comment here, so here is my humble opinion. This is not an easy page to ink, there is a lot goign on, a lot of different textures and from what I can tell you have a decent handle on the idea and the techniques. Spotting Blacks? really hard to do, I've seen worse, I've DONE worse LOL. Moving on to the advice portion, and feel free to ignore me completely. What I do with pages that have a lot to them and tricky textures, or to help with spotting blacks, is I print out a small photocopy of the pencils and I actually plot out my plan of attack, I spot blacks and I try out different tools and ideas on all the textures, really when learning to ink, it's a lot of trial and error, and the longer u do it, the more intuitively things will come to you. Also, I recently found an inker that I really identify with and who really opened my eyes to a lot of things I never thought of, so my advice, just read a lot of comics, with a lot of inkers, you'll run into 12 ways to ink a shadow and it can help you decide which you like best. That's all I can think of, your inking is coming along fine, I love that ur embracing it! Hope me trying to help didn't come off as mean or cocky, I'm just all about inkers helping each other as many have done for me :)

Quite the contrary, Dana, I recognize you as a superior inker to me and I'm taking your advice seriously. You have a much greater grasp on the art then I do. I know my pencils and colors are stronger skills in my repertoire then inking. But it is VERY fun, since I think I'm learning quickly.

I'll apply the technique for spotting blacks you just described to me next time I ink one of my original pieces. Thank you for your attention and I hope you'll help me out as I refine the skill more and more. :D

I'll peruse my comic collection some more this weekend, paying close attention to the inks.

I LOVE inking, I don't know if you know this about me, but I do...I'm not using it to break into penciling or because I have to (not that there is something wrong with that), but I'm so into it.

Awesome! I can't wait to see how your next inks come out, not to mention ur great pencils, I'll keep an eye out, and I know I've more than made my opinions known, but goes both ways, please feel free to make any suggestions you can think of on my inks :)
